Liveness

Understanding Liveness

The rise of cryptocurrencies has led to the development of consensus algorithms.

In the context of distributed systems, liveness refers to the ability of a protocol to enable message exchange among nodes, resulting in successful consensus among those nodes.

This guarantees that a system has liveness ensured.

In the case of blockchains, the focus is not merely on the messages themselves but rather on determining the accurate history of transactions.

Distributed Systems Correctness

When it comes to distributed systems, correctness involves transaction ordering and comprises two key aspects: liveness and safety.

Liveness ensures that favorable outcomes will eventually occur without specifying a specific timeframe.

Liveness guarantees that all validators will ultimately agree on a value.

It ensures that no two validators will be in disagreement and reach different values.

Conversely, safety guarantees the absence of adverse events.

Ensuring Data Integrity

If all nodes are honest, the actual and expected history should be the same.

A discrepancy between two nodes representing copies of the ledger within the blockchain network indicates a problem.

Nodes must reach a consensus on the content of the next block.
