With too many choices out there, we want to make it easy for you to pick the right exchange. With over 10 years of crypto trading, and alongside the team here, we have tried and tested many platforms to curate this list of the best fiat-to-crypto exchanges.

1. Coinbase

Best for North America

coinbase logo
Coinbase is one of the best fiat to crypto exchanges

Coinbase is one of the largest exchanges globally, with a strong reputation and user-friendly interface. It’s the top fiat-to-crypto exchange for our readers in North America as it’s become compliant in the US and Canada.

Identity verification is more stringent than other exchanges on the list, which can slow down your initial purchases, but we prioritize security above all else. You can convert fiat to crypto through bank transfers or credit and debit cards.

Coinbase supports 60+ fiat currencies and 100+ cryptocurrencies with stringent security and compliance measures. Deposits are free through ACH or cost $10 through wire.

Trading fees are a bit higher than some crypto exchanges, ranging from 0.05% – 0.6%, but we still find them reasonable for the level of security and user experience you get.

The low withdrawal fees impressed us, with ACH transfer being free and wires only costing $25 USD. You can also use a Coinbase Card to spend your holdings easily at over 600 retailers.

One drawback of Coinbase is that customer support can be slow to respond at times without 24/7 support lines.

2. Binance

Best for outside North America

Binance is the highest volume crypto exchange globally

Binance is the top crypto exchange platform worldwide by trading volume, offering fast crypto purchases with instant bank transfers or card payments.

Fiat deposits are available for many currencies, including USD, EUR, and RUB, and there are over 600 crypto assets. Deposits are free through bank transfer or have fees of up to 3.3% via credit card. Withdrawal fees are up to 2.2%, depending on your currency and method.

We love the low trading fees Binance offers, which max out at 0.1% and reduce depending on your trading volume and Binance coin (BNB) holdings. The platform may be difficult for beginners to adjust to, but it offers great advanced features for experienced traders.

Binance uses 2FA and collects KYC, demonstrating its commitment to security.  The main exchange is unavailable in the US and Canada due to local regulations, but they’ve released a US-specific version with reduced trade types.

We’ve had great experiences with Binance customer support. They offer 24/7 live chat, and we had an issue trying to deposit funds, which was resolved in under an hour.

3. Crypto.com

Best for earning rewards

Crypto.com logo
Crypto.com is well known for its rewards programs

Crypto.com exploded in popularity due to its metal VISA cards and high-profile sponsorships, and it has now established itself as one of the major crypto exchanges.

This exchange platform is easy to use for beginners, offering a user-friendly interface and fiat money purchases with bank transfers or debit and credit cards.

Crypto.com offers free deposits, but your bank may charge a fee. The two main fiat currencies supported are USD and EUR, with withdrawal fees dependent on the crypto coin and method used. Bitcoin withdrawals cost 0.0006 BTC, which can add up, so be strategic and make larger, infrequent withdrawals.

Once you buy crypto, trading fees are competitive starting at 0.075% and going down to 0% for high volume traders.

Our favorite part of this exchange is the substantial rewards you can earn from shopping with a physical or virtual Crypto.com card. You can earn up to 10% cash back at 300,000 retailers.

One drawback of Crypto.com is that support can be less than desirable at times, but we’ve had success when we’ve needed help in the past.

4. Kraken

Best user interface

Kraken is a solid exchange for using fiat money to buy crypto

Kraken has always been one of our top exchange picks because of its ease of use and extensive currency availability. You can easily connect your bank account or use a credit or debit card to exchange fiat currency for crypto, including USD, CAD, AUD, and EUR.

The selection of major fiat currencies is smaller than that of some platforms on the list, but it’s a reliable exchange with a secure platform that’s easy to navigate.

Kraken only charges bank fees for the fiat transfer for deposits, and withdrawal fees vary by crypto coin. For example, the Bitcoin withdrawal fee is 0.0002 BTC, and the Ethereum withdrawal fee is 0.003 ETH. Kraken Pro offers even lower rates, with competitive trading fees as low as 0% and access to advanced tools.

Kraken is broadly available except in select US states (New York and Washington), and because of local regulations, its feature set is reduced in Canada.

Kraken has the best user interface among the fiat-to-crypto exchanges, with a range of features and quick processing times.

5. eToro

Best for beginners

eToro fiat to crypto exchange logo
eToro offers easy set up for beginners

eToro is a user-friendly crypto exchange offering traditional investment instruments alongside cryptocurrency, making it a great place to start your investing journey.

Account setup is very easy, and there aren’t any overcomplicated features, which is why it’s our top fiat-to-crypto exchange for beginners. I signed up, deposited funds from PayPal, and redeemed a welcome bonus within 10 minutes.

While only 21 cryptocurrencies are available, eToro offers the most popular coins like Bitcoin and Ethereum. This is perfectly suitable for new traders who aren’t looking to overcomplicate their portfolio when starting out.

Once you buy your first crypto holdings, you can use the social trading feature to copy successful traders on the platform. If you end up wanting to sell crypto you own and want to withdraw cash, fees are very low at $5. Transaction fees at eToro are amongst the most competitive on the crypto market.

It’s a great fiat-to-crypto exchange for beginners, with a fast set-up and relatively low trading fees. It also offers frequent signup bonuses.

6. OKX

Best variety of fiats

OKX fiat to crypto exchange logo
OKX is one of the best crypto to fiat exchanges

OKX is a fiat-to-crypto exchange with 80+ fiat currencies and 300+ crypto coins available. Currently, only bank transfers are available for deposits, but card payments will likely return in the future.

There are no deposit fees, and cash withdrawal fees are in line with or below industry averages from our experience, varying based on the currency. Bitcoin withdrawals cost 0.0005 BTC.

Once you exchange fiat currency for crypto, trading fees are very reasonable, maxing out at 0.1%. We also love the trading features and automated bots, but they’re better suited to crypto investors with some prior experience.

OKX isn’t available in the US, Canada or Hong Kong, but you can access it if you live in most other regions. Security measures are industry standard, with 95% of funds stored in cold wallets, multi factor authentication, and identity verification.

In our experience, customer support has been very responsive when we needed help connecting bank accounts, changing account information, or making other requests.

Why Use These Exchanges for Buying BTC?

There’s no shortage of crypto exchanges out there promising to easily convert your fiat to crypto, they’re not created equal.

Crypto exchanges are your critical tool in venturing into the market or perfecting your strategy, so our goal is to help you find the right one and avoid decision paralysis.

Using a secure exchange that offers the currency and features you need sets you up for success in the crypto space. We look for a strong reputation, transparent business practices, and industry leading security measures like 2FA.

We consider the available payment methods and currencies, balancing flexibility and speed with security and compliance. We also test the user interface and key features offered.

We differentiate between exchanges that are great for beginners because of ease of use, and those more suited to advanced traders who are looking for more robust tools.

Payment Methods and Security: What You Need to Know

Exchanges typically offer multiple deposit methods for you to add fiat currency to your account, which you’ll use to buy crypto.

The common options are credit or debit cards, instant bank transfers, ACH, and third-party payment processors like PayPal. Make sure your preferred payment method is available before choosing an exchange.

There are a few key security measures to look for when choosing an exchange, including two-factor authentication, data encryption, and cold wallet storage.

Compliance is another major consideration, with exchanges increasingly having to comply with anti-money laundering directives that ensure user and transaction safety. Understand your regional regulations and choose an exchange that’s fully compliant to avoid issues.

How to Select and Use a Fiat to Crypto Exchange?

Choose a fiat-to-crypto exchange that suits your level of expertise, region, and goals. Check the supported fiat currencies, fee structure, security measures, user interface, and quality of customer support before signing up.

First off, make sure that the fiat to crypto exchange isn’t banned in your country, which should be automatically flagged when you go to their website. It’s best to choose a crypto exchange that’s registered with local financial authorities and is fully regulated and compliant.

Once you confirm you can use the crypto exchange in your country, check that your currency is available to deposit fiat funds. Even if the cryptocurrency exchange operates in your region, your local currency may not be supported.

Next, evaluate the local payment methods available for converting fiat currency. Typical options include transferring from financial institutions or paying with credit cards and debit cards.

Now that you’ve determined the cryptocurrency exchange can support your fiat-to-crypto conversions, look for transparent and robust security measures. Choosing a secure trading platform is critical to protecting your funds, so look for multi-factor authentication, data encryption, cold wallet storage, and KYC verification.

Once these fundamentals are in place, assess the suitability of the user interface and features for your level of ability and trading goals. Confirm that the trade types you want to use are available and any special tools like automated bots if you want to use them.

Customer support is another important factor when choosing a crypto exchange, as it can greatly impact your overall experience and cause delays in transactions at critical price dips in the crypto market.

Using Your Selected Exchange

Once you’ve chosen a fiat to crypto exchange that fits all of your needs, here’s a quick guide to start buying Bitcoin. We have extensive guides broken down by each exchange.

  1. Create an account on your chosen exchange, setting a strong password and verifying your email address
  2. Complete your personal details and identity verification as prompted by the exchange, which will require a valid address and government ID in most cases
  3. Add your desired payment method, either connecting to your bank or adding a credit card or debit card
  4. If connecting to financial institutions, you’ll either be able to do an instant transfer through a platform like Plaid or will need to wait a few business days for your account to be verified
  5. Once your payment method has been added, deposit your fiat currency, then convert your fiat to crypto using the buy feature on the platform
  6. To buy crypto, choose the coin you’re interested in i.e. Bitcoin (BTC) and specify how much fiat to convert to that coin
  7. You now own BTC and can freely trade, sell, or buy additional digital assets.
